Jain style Sambhar Recipe




Introduction:


Sambhar is a spicy stew made with toor dal. It is very popular in the South Indian cuisine. Sambhar is eaten with boiled rice, Idlis, Vadas, Dosas, it accompanies almost every meal.



Cooking Time: 30 Min
Serves: 4 people

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Toovar Dal
  • 1 Tablespoon Sambhar Powder
  • 1 Small Tomato, diced
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • A pinch Asafoetida (Hing)
  • Salt to Taste
  • 1 Teaspoon Urad Dal
  • 1 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds (Rai)
  • 3 to 4 Curry Leaves
  • 2 Tablespoon Oil 
  • To Garnish:
  • 1 Tablespoon Cilantro (Coriander Leaves), finely chopped
  


Preparation:

  1. In a pressure cooker, add dal, sambhar powder, tomato, turmeric powder, salt and 3 cups of water.
  2. Cook for 4 whistles turn off heat and let it cool down for 10 minutes.
  3. Heat a heavy bottom sauce pan over medium heat, add oil.
  4. Add split urad dal and mustard seeds wait until they crackle.
  5. Then add asafoetida and curry leaves.
  6. Add the cooked dal and mix well. Simmer for few 3 minutes on medium heat.
  7. Garnish wtih cilantro and serve with rice.
